edit, solved, can't delete thread... changed provide solution. problem: when login, terminal in upper left-hand corner of screen wallpaper in background. solution: uninstalled thought random orphaned packages relating evolution (evolution-data-common, etc..) turns out uninstalls gnome-panel well, although didn't warn me. reinstall gnome-panel , reinstall required packages (you can still run synaptic terminal!) fin. why don't use live cd or usb boot laptop , change hostname back,the problem may solved. i finished 8-page color brochure using indesign cs4 and  need proof on canon 6100 before submitting files press. i  installed snow leopard (10.6.3) on mac pro , bit stumped. entire brochure created in final press cmyk space. when access the  print driver indesign, defaults vendor matching instead of colorsync—good far.  then, in main driver window, have 2 choices..kyuanos (canon's auto color stuff, forget it) or icc  matching mode. no color correction not show in list , cannot see how disable color matching in driver. perhaps snow leopard color management thing rearing head. want simulate press color , density on 6100, , have done plenty of  times before, had access no color correction setting in driver. how do this? need select colorsync , fool somehow? thanks, lou i figured out. not snow leopard issue @ all.   the new canon driver supports snow leopard moved "no color correction" choice different location, , didn't think there. in pre...

we using lucidlynx linux, 64-bit, activedirectory accounts via samba/winbind 64-bit. have 2 separate 32-bit applications: ibm mq toolkit (32-bit java-based) , acrobat reader (32-bit) fail run. throw different errors: jvmshrc155e error copying username cache name and getpwuid_r(): failed due unknown user id (6090) can solve both issues adding entry in /etc/passwd file activedirectory user running application. (of course hack, i'd rather not do) surmising real problem/solution these 32-bit applications work if installed 32-bit samba , winbind 32-bit libnss_winbind.so around assist in nss (name service switch) request username if given userid. don't want have 32-bit , 64-bit samba/winbind installed on 1 machine can imagine stir more issues. solution pray both applications have 64-bit version install. i downloaded ubuntu 10.04 , want install on old computer. when boot cd looks fine in beginning promt ask if want install ubuntu or want test via live-cd not readable cause screen looks kinda chess board, half of being actual window text , , other half black or white. thought might because of cd worked fine when used same cd on other computer. dont think because of cd-drive because tried both same problem. assume has graphics-driver or -card. system fujitsu scaleo p intel pentium 4 ati radeon x700 se when booting cd, hit key @ first splash image. should show main menu. can hit f6 (or f4) advanced options, , safe graphics. after selecting safe graphics, select try ubuntu option try , load cd. see if worked. if not, @ other advanced options boot, nomodeset, noacpi, etc. trial , miss until hit right option. once know made work, can install , implement option permanently, or in cases first boot a...
