Strange Hidden Characters

i have several editors getting strange hidden characters appearing occasionally. it's not time , there doesn't seem pattern. started cs4. working , of sudden, of hidden characters change little dot these large cross-like symbols. can quit incopy , restart , symbols go away, it's hassle. these editors working on macs. has else seen this?
