how do i fill a pen selection with a gradient fill?

i trying follow (http://www.rnel.net/tutorial/photoshop/11541) tutorial, , cannot fill gradient!  don't know doing wrong, , cannot seem figure out on own.  have ps cs3.  comments @ bottom of tutorial, seems not 1 can figure out.  newbie ps, , self taught.  have started using tutorials online.  appreciate , help!  thank you!

the tutorial seems pretty specific.  can point out step lost at?
