LED Stage Lighting (Project Feasibility)

hi all,

i've been challenged task of dressing stage. budget i've been given small; l.e.d. cans, believe more bang-for-buck if took on d.i.y. project. i've heard of arduino before, , i've seen of neat projects people have done, i'm not sure of limitations.

the space need dress up:
stage wall, 9 metres width, , 2 metres high (stage floor bottom boundary of projector screen).

the idea:

wire them pairs, 2 5 metre strips per channel, 4 independently controllable channels. run 30 metre long 16 core cable stage lighting desk both power , control colours.
make controller box 4 channels.
each channel controls to:

• switch on , off


• press-to-activate button switch (this allow user pulse / strobe lights)


• hue control dial (think of hitting cmd / ctrl + u in photoshop)


• brightness dial


• white level dial (a way manually fade colour out, should override 'auto mode')


• button auto mode (to automatically fade through colours of spectrum ref: http://bit.ly/tgtw7v) if depressed = operating in auto mode. if pressed again = check hue dial, white level dial , brightness , fade settings


• speed control auto mode (speed or slow down how shade fading occurs)

let me know if you'd see mockup sketches.

all of these dials , switches along l.e.d. strips wired one, or 4 arduino project boards.

the questions:
can done?
can done 1 arduino, or need 1 each channel?
which arduino should select?
where start looking?
is interested in making group project?
