working with .phtml files in dreamweaver... a how to


hope helps diving magento, zend, , other goodies, want comfort of dreamweaver.  nice if came way, it's easy add dreamweaver.

 

by default, dreamweaver cannot read phtml files. can add file type “open in code view” section of preferences if wish have fast access, cannot view file in design view if that. if use dreamweaver (versions 4, mx, mx2004, 8, or 9, aka cs3,cs4) design sites, and wish open magento’s template files (they have .phtml extensions) in dreamweaver, can follow these steps add support .phtml and make dreamweaver render php code (with coloring, hinting, et al) allow see design in code view if desired. below 3 steps follow.*

 

 

important notes: guide dreamweaver on windows (xp or vista) or mac os x. note: have excluded version numbers file locations shown, and if using version older dreamweaver 9 (cs3) replace “adobe” “macromedia” in file locations shown. spaces have been removed keep references on 1 line.

 

* dreamweaver 4 users: if using archaic dreamweaver 4, need follow step one. however, it’s highly recommended upgrade version 8, cs3 or newer superb css and web standards support.

 

* vista may need edit files running notepad administrator, requirement not common and if encountered, may avoidable following these steps after fresh restart. however, if unavoidable, go start > programs > accessories, and right click on notepad and select “run administrator”. once notepad open, use file > open browse applicable file before making necessary changes.

 

 

 

open following extension configuration file in notepad and change lines specified below:

xp: documents and settings > [user] > application data > adobe dreamweaver > configuration > extensions.txt

note: if cannot see application data folder, go tools → folder options → view and make sure show hidden files and folders checked.

vista: users > [user] > appdata > roaming > adobe > dreamweaver 9 > configuration > extensions.txt

mac os x: users > [home folder] >library > application support > adobe > dreamweaver [your version] > [en_us or other locale (only version cs4)] > configuration > extensions.txt

htm,html,shtm,shtml, ... ,txt,php,php3,php4,php5,phtml,jsp,wml,tpl, ... ,master:all documents



php
,php3,php4,php5,tpl,phtml:php files

this file pretty extensions.txt file located in dreamweaver’s application data folder, except in dreamweaver’s program files folder, inside configuration folder. in step one, find file and change lines specified below.

xp, vista: program files > adobe > dreamweaver [your version] > configuration > extensions.txt

mac os x: applications > adobe dreamweaver [your version] > configuration > extensions.txt

 

 

htm,html,shtm,shtml, ... ,txt,php,php3,php4,php5,phtml,jsp,wml,tpl, ... ,master:all documents

php,php3,php4,php5,tpl,phtml:php files

 

 

this apply php code coloring settings phtml files file xml file should located in:

xp, vista: program files > adobe > dreamweaver [your version] > configuration > documenttypes > mmdocumenttypes.xml

mac os x: applications > adobe dreamweaver [your version] > configuration > documenttypes > mmdocumenttypes.xml

note: dreamweaver 8 users on windows may need apply these changes to: c:program files > macromedia > dreamweaver 8 > configuration > document types > mmdocumenttypes.xml

note: in windows 7/vista may need update file permissions under properties>security tab in order save changes file.

restart or open dreamweaver and shouldn’t have problems phtml files longer.
