Thread: Incorrect resolution set despite correct EDID info

greetings,
problem began when after connecting external vga monitor, laptop monitor somehow changed it´s normal 1024x600 resolution 1024x768 resolution, , shrinks vertical pixels fit on screen (no panning).
on lucid, 2.6.32-23 on asus 1005ha integrated intel 945gm graphics. using updated kms-enabled xserver-xorg-video-intel drivers (2.9.1-3ubuntu5)

sincerely not understand how or why happened, know has intel driver, since creating xorg.conf file (do not use 1 normally) , setting driver fbdev corrects problem (although lousy performance).

astonishment, xorg correctly detects monitor modes 1024x600, 800x600, , 640x480 evidenced on xorg log below. reason, splash screen , x start fine, correct full-screen 1024x600 resolution, display visibly shrinked/scaled (leaving black bar below, "filled" screen) resulting in full-screen 1024x768 resolution.

xrandr output is:

code:
screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 4096 x 4096 vga1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) lvds1 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 220mm x 129mm 1024x600 60.0*+ 65.0 800x600 60.3 640x480 59.9
as can see, reason screen using 1024x768 resolution, although not in listed supported modes below! correctly detected edid, including screen size (220x129mm). abnormal change can see compared before ("lvds1 connected 1024x768+0+0") should 1024x600+0+0.

if try changing resolution 1024x600 using xrandr (or ubuntu display settings), unused black bar on bottom of screen, 150pixels high. xrandr output after xrandr -s 1024x600:

code:
screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 600, maximum 4096 x 4096 vga1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) lvds1 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 220mm x 129mm 1024x600 60.0*+ 65.0 800x600 60.3 640x480 59.9
when trying set dpi value should have (118dpi, though dpi value used causes exact same thing), setting appears not take effect (any dpi value used results in no image change), , entire screen used, resolution goes 1024x768. xrandr output after xrandr --dpi 118:

code:
screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 4096 x 4096 vga1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) lvds1 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 220mm x 129mm 1024x600 60.0*+ 65.0 800x600 60.3 640x480 59.9
i appreciate bizarre issue. googled , searched bug reports days without finding answer. have tried kinds of things on xorg.conf. have tried installing latest xserver-xorg-video-intel (2.11.0). have tried removing xserver-xorg-video-intel --purge , reinstalling. nothing works. have tried booting using 2.6.31 kernel no results. lastly, tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg-video-intel no results.

here xorg.0.log:
