Thread: Deleting/Erasing Old Files , Partitioning , Re-Installation
i giving away laptop dual boot xp , ubuntu. partitions:
- /dev/sda1 : dell utility 41mb fat ;
- /dev/sda2 : 55gb ntfs ( xp);
- /dev/sda3 : 20gb extended (10gb ext4 /, 1.5gb ext4 boot, 2.0gb swap, 6.5gb ext4 home);
- /dev/sda4 : 5.0gb dell restore.
erase old files, plan on burning ubuntu live cd , enter in terminal:
'sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda2 bs=1m ' , :
'sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda3 bs=1m'
, leave sda1 , sda4 untouched in case new owner wants reinstall windows in future.
how should use free 75gb ? install ubuntu on 35gb extended partition , leave remaining 40gb empty xp, if wanted?
or should use entire 75gb ubuntu ?
thank
nothing have written indicates need separate partition /boot -- can lose one.
it's not clear whether setting drive scratch, or preserving existing setup. if latter, yes, "dd" approach way clean off old data partitions.
if you're starting new installations of both os's, advise making gparted live cd, , use (a) delete partitions, (b) make new partition table, , (c) set new partitions (without /boot). doing that, data recovery professional ever able discover prior data on hard drive, , skip "dd" thing.
75gb nice space general data storage. if new user doesn't know/appreciate benefits of running linux, should format ntfs , let windows storage drive.
