hi! i'm semi-new ubuntu- do know way around terminal , general system procedures.
here's situation need with:
- an upgrade %100 pwnd system: performed upgrade lucid karmic , lost keyboard input , sound etc etc etc.
- i made karmic boot-run/install cd, & usb startup stick.
- i backed up important information on flashdrives etc.
- at point in time i have 2 partitions
1 old user account & info on it, , other new (re)installed karmic partition.
my question is:what procedure for:
a) formatting drive,
b) not keeping 2 partitions, ,
c) re-installing ubuntu (karmic) onto it?
have gparted ( can't see how use format ), , i have no clue how format drive either within gui or @ command-line.

1. (with other computer) download iso , make parted magic live cd. same rules usual -- check md5sum of download, burn slow can.
2. boot parted magic live cd. when loaded , running, use window/box in upper right select hard drive.
3. observing 2 partitions in graphical display, make sure not mounted (they shouldn't be), i.e. there no little padlock graphic on them. if mounted, right-click on graphic each partition unmount it.
4. right click on each partition, , choose "delete". click green "apply" arrow on top menu. when done, have empty hard drive no partitions -- graphic show space "unallocated".
5. can right-click on unallocated space graphic, choose "new", , add partition, or (one @ time) multiple partitions. note when add them, can choose filesystem type, , make them formatted @ time created. again, once set way want it, click green "apply" make happen.
6. before you're done, if you're planning boot os on first partition of drive, it's idea right-click partition , choose "manage flags", , put checkmark in "boot" box -- it's not mandatory bios's (for linux -- windows), makes difference.
that's basics. google can find lots more on partitioning if need it. minimum requirement swap space (1.5x ram good) , balance of drive can os. or can make swap partition, 15g partition os, , rest of drive can third partition on can mount /home when install ubuntu, using alternate install cd , choosing "manual" partitioning.
once you're finished parted magic session , partitioning, boot alternate install ubuntu cd , away go!
