Change color of bitmap or greyscale image without Direct Selection tool?

i upgraded indd cs4 on mac snowleopard.  in cs2 select frame b/w bitmap or greyscale image inside of it, select tool active (v), drag color , bitmap change color desired.  in cs4 when that, entire frame's background changes color, not bitmap. have go direct selection (a) now. poor child may thinking, when have once every few minutes or so, step pain.  solution, eternally grateful.

don't select frame, drag swatch , drop on unselected image.
