Rough Edges - Masks

i searched fourm looking way create think called mask.  basically, want create rough edges on object similar inserted image.  see how edges appear torn of background showing?

 

my goal create similar. done w/ masks or adjustment layers? both?

 

a link tutorial great. don't know call process, therefore, not sure begin search.

if make selection round object can convert mask , rough edges of mask grungy brush.
