How do I authenticate Update Notices?

a web acquaintence call lew suffered hijacking required reformat , reinstallation of windows. believes worm delivered in form of malware masquerading adobe reader update.

 

     lew described notification popped in system tray perfect imitation of real thing.  wondered why receiving spam email account, went silent week.

 

     on march 13 downloaded , installed adobe reader 8. have update notification in system tray. updater appears as

adobe acrobat speed launcher.ink c:\windows\installer\{ac76ba86-1033-0000-7760-000000000002}\sc_acrobat.exe

 

in startup list.

 

     how can genuine adobe update, not worm trying sneak in?

i've never seen notification system tray reader update.

the adobe updater open in window , advise me checking updates.

 

that said, let me ask this

 

do have antivirus software installed?

have run system scan?

 

if answered no either or both, need antivirus software (like avg free) , install it. run complete system scan. if indeed worm, appears is, avg find , quarantine it.

 

as rule, click help , check updates update of adobe software. never rely on
