Thread: A PLEA for help with Catalyst 10.6 install

hello all.

i'm new linux in general , far in love it.
windows machine "toy" now.

let me preface saying work home , rely on "solid work computer" job done.
old reliable pentium 4 machine.
1 gig or ram video card ati hd2600 256m video card.
run 2 acer 1440x900 monitors in extended desk top. necessary can view @ glance without hunting need see.
i'm running ubuntu 10.4 32bit , has been pleasure point accept 1 things. 2d graphics bit sluggish.
when new catalyst 10.6 driver release updated opengl , improved 2d performance.
bit of googling , found several "methods" install driver since isn't in regular software channel ubuntu.
well, following seemed correct procedure hosed system yesterday. after backtracking able video working enough work done. @ point doesn't work did when attempted install 10.6 driver.
if can here, need de facto procedure install catalyst 10.6 driver on system. know have done via command line (i great dos in day) said, i'm newbie linux.

my advice use driver in repos. problem installing external drivers, unlinked every other update, , have reinstalled. had 4 boxes running ati cards (i still prefer nvidia) incompatible repo driver in karmic, had pull ati themselves. had reinstall on pcs everyother week or so, , got rather weird results (x failures, no mouse pointers, etc).

pleased new repo drivers support hd4200's , hd3870's. when update unlinks driver, updater takes care of automatically.

install procedure is:
1) backup
2) download driver
3) cd dir contains driver
4) issue command

code:

sudo sh ./<downloadedfilename>

5) walk through menu.
6) reboot
7) test
