Thread: Not detecting PATA IDE drive
hello everyone!
i've got big issue intel ss-4200. headless nas device. pretty standard hardware.
according (http://ss4200.pbworks.com/) features 2 disk controllers:
the device has 4 internal sata connector + 1 pata connector on board. connected 160gb 2.5" ide device 1 pata connector (using 3.5" 2.5" ide adapter). on sata connectors there no disks now.sii 3132 sata300 controller drives esata ports
intel ich7r controller drives 4 internal sata ports , pata port
use minimal netboot ubuntu install usb key boot installer environment (using serial console).
in bios (amibios) can configure disk controller either enhanced or compatible.
using enhanced mode: have 6 disk slots on controller (the 4 sata + 2 pata). it's possible change order (sata first vs. pata first). depending on setting bios detects pata drive master device either on "primary ide master" or "third ide master". either way ubuntu kernel not able detect pata drive (fdisk -l or installer partitioner).
setting disk controller compatible makes ubuntu detect pata drive. big downside in mode bios allows 2 ide channels only! means can use 2 out of 4 sata drives (because 1 ide channel used pata). need connect 4 sata drives. using mode able install ubuntu.
able boot debian lenny minimal install disk using same technique (fromn usb key, serial console). debian detects pata drive in both enhanced , compatible mode. debian doesn't yet use libata older linux ide driver (pata drive show /dev/hdx instead of /dev/sdx). using debian no option me (as time switch libata wouldn't solution anyway).
kind of stuck problem , don't further. there must way of having ubuntu detect pata drive!
extremely grateful hint!

ps: did pretty exhaustive search before posting both on forum , using google. example here issue described: http://ss4200.pbworks.com/ubuntu-server--9_10-amd64 (under known issues)
lot of discussions similar issues suggest ide cable problems. checked cable dozen times. brand new udma-133 80-pin cable , not using wrong way.
ide drive jumpered master.
edit:
here issue described (without obvious solution):
