Thread: Unable to create a 17th partition

hi there,

partitioning hard disk ready installation of multiple linux distributions , that's happened. booted notebook using ubuntu 10.04 lucid live cd , used gparted partition hard disk.

first, created extended partition cover whole hard disk (don't worry, backed-up twice , stored on server). then, decided skip first gib of hard disk , started creating multiple ext4 partitions (10 gib each) , labelled them i'll able tell partition contains distribution later on. when satisfied result, created multiple 100 mib ext4 partitions @ beginning of hard disk (the first gib of unallocated space, remember?) i'm planning mount boot partitions each distribution. but, when created 16 logical partitions in total, gparted refused create 17th partition, let alone 18th , on...

question is: gparted unable create more 16 partitions on single hard disk, or known fact extended partition cannot contain more 16 partitions (so wrong blame gparted this). so, possible me create more 16 partitions using work-around or manually partition hard disk using terminal, or should not create partitions on hard disk?

standard/default hard drive setup, ms-dos partition table type, limit max of 4 primary partitions. 1 (and one) of primary partitions can designated "extended" type , subdivided max of (15 scsi/63 ide) logical partitions. if formerly primary, "extended" partition used contain logical partitions, not available primary partition other use, lost. result, scsi or sata drive should able pack in 18 partitions, using 4 primary partitions, , using 1 of them extended partition hold 15 logical partitions (losing id primary in process).

note there other partition table types (guid) different rules.

depending on trying oss, might want consider installing them on virtual hard drives, under vmware or virtualbox.
