Thread: wierd visual affect makes reading text impossible

i upgraded ubuntu 10.04 9.10 , have problem with
visual affect.
first set background color white no color gradient.
bottom right in fact white go , left it
becomes more gray. background affect not strong.
problem comes when bring ubuntu window.
if window put in bottom quarter of screen
, rightmost quarter of screen (1/16th of screen)
window bright , text quite readable.
however, move window , left window
colors become darker , text more difficult read.
if bring terminal window , run vi , background black
text of color except white impossible (almost invisible)
read in top left corner , white unnecessarily difficult
read. explored system/preferences/appearance , find no
setting had affect (except theme light colored
background helped).

note problem not screen because if run application
creates own windows (squeak/smalltalk) problems not
occur in application windows except outermost window containing
entire application. if run firefox problem occurs in all
windows problem not bad except outermost window
because thicker fonts used.

how turn visual affect off???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

confuses me why want visual affect
, go through trouble of creating it!?

appreciated!!!!!!!

regards,

ralph boland
