Illustrator CS2 and InDesign CS2 not starting - here is how it was solved.

this document merely compilation of information found @ sources named @ bottom of document.

basically running older adobe cs2 software on macbook pro 10.6.x snow leopard - many of either can't afford upgrade cs3, cs4 or cs5, or maybe don't see need so.  it's running slow since using rosetta, work - well, used work.

illustrator cs2, indesign cs2, photoshop cs2, etc. running fine after upgrade snow leopard (under 10.6, 10.6.1 , 10.6.2).  update 10.6.3 installed.  @ same time bunch of other updates - including acrobat 8.2 update - installed.  not sure did it, of sudden illustrator cs2 stopped responding @ start screen - no longer started , indesign cs2 popped registration/licensing screen.  when trying enter license info on first key press application quit entirely.

so maybe 10.6.3 update culprit.  never thought acrobat 8.2/8.2.1 updates.  found thread here:

which pointed me the instructions here:

replace corresponding files present in “ /library/application support/adobe/typespt/unicode/mappings/” folder 1 attached document.

1. download attached mac.dmg (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/534/cpsid_53468/attachments/mac.dmg) file machine issue seen.
2. close adobe applications
3. double click mac.dmg file mount it.
4. copy mac folder mounted image. paste /library/applicationsupport/adobe/typespt/unicode/mappings/.
5. a message appears confirm replace existing 'mac' folder. replace 'mac' folder.
6. launch illustrator or indesign cs or cs 2.

 

the mac folder attached kb document has correct permissions set, should not necessary complete steps below. there may cases permissions mac folder overwritten. in such case, original issue can reoccur. solve issue, complete steps below:

1. follow solution 1 , make sure adobe applications closed.
2. right or control click , select 'get info' on mac folder  in “ /library/application support/adobe/typespt/unicode/mappings/”, have copied .dmg file attached document.
3. verify under 'sharing , permissions' users listed have no write access
4. if change required, click padlock symbol , provide administrator credentials
5. select user has write access , change 'read only'.
6. ensure user 'everyone' set 'no access.
7. to check if issue has been solved, launch acrobat 8.2 , illustrator or indesign cs or cs 2.

even after following instructions still "no love" illustrator cs2 or indesign cs2.  indesign did no longer show registration screen, didn't continue launching, , illustrator progressed further along in start sequence never finished launching.

then found article on adobe site.  quoting part performed  , did trick.

3. @ finder, choose file > find.

4. typeadobefnt10.lst (illustrator cs2), select system drive, , press return.

5. delete adobefnt10.lst files found.

6. restart computer.

7. restart illustrator. illustrator creates new adobefnt10.lst or adobefnt07.lst file.

illustrator cs2 stopped working me on snow leopard well. boiled down not update 12.0.1. not sure release of snow leopard on when figured out keep up-to-date, @ 10.6.6 , cs2 still works fine. keep getting prompted update 12.0.1 time time cancel it.

 

i'm sure @ 12.0.1 when moved leopard snow leopard , that, not snow leopard update, "broke" cs2 12.0.1. if remember correctly, if try apply update, won't go through anyway.
