Thread: Broken packages, instability

so, friend's computer, running 8.04, refused boot while, took @ it. appeared boot fine, when got login screen, crashed when started typing. did hard power-off, booted again, , tried update packages (it has been disused few months, , suspected problems had been fixed). synaptic told me have uninstall bunch of packages in addition updating, fine , good, crashed @ end of it's purge, , left me wondering if system stable afterwards. update manager told me had broken packages, went on updating few of them. when went synaptic, disagreed, showing no broken packages. tried open firefox, gnome crashed, i'm here.

has pretty internet connection, how do mass reinstall of of packages, , do before or after update packages?

your post little short on specifics try best help.

first step check hardware problems: run memtest, check filesystem errors, maybe open case , clean out dust bunnies.

next recommend going system->administration->software sources , uncheck suspicious ppas or 3rd-party repositories think might causing stability problems.

finally, series of commands should towards working default ubuntu desktop:

code:
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
