when have problems nm icon pl check these
1) go system-preferences-startup applications , see network manager ticked
2) right click on panel , click add panel add "notification area" list.
3) have observed nm icon missing when
a)nm-system-settings.conf says managed=false
solve
code:
gksudo gedit /etc/networkmanager/nm-system-settings.conf
and set
code:
managed=true
or
b)/etc/network/interfaces contain other than
code:
auto lo iface lo inet loopback
to solve comment out other lines(or backup file , edit contains these lines)
