i trying install mrtg use nagios. running ubuntu 9.10. trying go through preparation process listed in mrtg documentation here:

going down list stuck installing gd library. downloaded latest source code , when go through motions install (sudo tar xzf, ./configure, make all, make install) errors.

when doing ./configure checks lot of things , "no" bunch (if need entire output post it). @ end says

support png library: no
support jpeg library: no
support freetype 2.x library: no
support fontconfig library: no
support xpm library: no
support pthreads: yes

supposed install of these packages first?

here "make all" errors @ end:

here "make install" errors:

i'm pretty confused on do. i've tried searching answers, nothing has worked.

yup, have install those. think called libpng-dev, not sure though. i'm on arch linux.
open synaptics , libraries.
