Thread: Lost wireless card / presario F500 / ubuntu v10.04

dear ubuntu forum members,

yesterday, lost wireless capability on laptop. card seem have vanished system, , not understand why. there switch in front activate/deactivate wireless, no matter position, led stay red (well, orange actually, vs. blue if activated)
have looked in system>admin>hardware drivers , updated every software no results. installed wicd still not see wireless device.
windows drivers seem exist vista 64bits, , not load. should not problem since has worked before.

saw on ubuntu addict couldn't see way register on forum reply quite randomly found same post here!

anyway, been 2 weeks since posted perhaps have solved if not these suggestions.

experienced similar problem f500 within year of purchase. seems problem motherboard related , "known" problem laptop fixed without questions , free of charge out of warranty (i late in touch hp support). may not have same problem @ though. wireless card did not give @ once, behaved temperamentally week , gave up, in same way mention, solid orange light , no in device manager (this happened when still had vista on here). 6 months later problem static electric sensor on motherboard prevented laptop booting , got in touch hp picked , repaired laptop quick sharp. found out static sensor problem common 1 model, wireless problem. i'm not sure updated site have here , compare model number, should eligible free repair:

of course problem might not hardware @ all! if not easy boot windows double check suggest booting ubuntu live cd, eg 1 installed from. reason detects, or rather able offer correct proprietary drivers wireless card (not first choice one, other 1 offers under hardware drivers, cant remember one). if ubuntu fails detect wireless card live cd might hardware related.

if bought laptop windows installed give restoring windows try last resort. if end sending laptop hp best restore windows or take out hdd before sending may try blame problem on ubuntu.

anyway thats advice. bit long winded sorry.
