Making black shape look whitish/grey on blk bkd by bringing down opacity

hi,

 

i'm working on indesign doc i've been able accomplish effect text. in case subject line needs clarification, have black text on black bkd looks whitish/gray b/c i've brought down opacity. however, have shape i've tried placing illustrator i'd to have same effect with. i've tried 2 different blacks in illustrator (type black , rich black) make sure wasn't issue.

 

any suggestions on how accomplish same effect on shape on type?

 

thanks!

make both text , ai file white , bring down opacity lower perenctage.
